Brief history of homeopathy
The principle dates back to the Greek physician Hippocrates in
the 5th century B.C. He realized that they were two ways of
treating illness, the way of contrary and the "like cure
likes". It wasn't until the 18th century Dr. Samuel
Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician and chemist took
this law and transformed it. He coined the expression "
Similia Similibus Curentur", the cornerstone of his
homeopathic philosophy.
Over a long period of times, he and his assistants took a
small doses of various substances, carefully noting the
symptoms they produced. They were called 'provings'.
Subsequently, patients suffering from similar symptoms were
treated with these substances. The results were encouraging
and often remarkable. During his times, he proved around 100
base remedies. Today's modern homeopathy has over 2000 well
proven remedies to choose from- taking into consideration
spiritual, mental, emotional and physical symptoms.
By 1820 homeopathy was spreading throughout Europe. In 1900,
about 20-25 % percent of all doctors in the United States were
Homeopaths. Chicago and Boston were the world centers for
homeopathy. There were 22 homeopathic medical schools and over
one hundred homeopathic hospitals.
Homeopathy lost its status in the United States because of
various political, economical and social pressures, including
the increasing use of pharmaceutical industry after WWII, but
survived in other parts of the world such as Europe, Asia,
South America and India. Today, most of its practitioner are
conventional licensed health care practitioners and lay
trained experts.
Recently, homeopathy has proven effective in conventional
clinical studies, and documented in many
internationally-recognized medical journals. All homeopathic
remedies are registered with the FDA and are subject to
government guidelines that ensure safety manufacturing
practices and correct labeling.
